The
eight story brick and limestone clad reinforced concrete structure was
originally constructed in 1916 for the Interurban Railway Company.
Interurban Railway was the first privately operated light rail system in North
Texas.
The building served as the hub
for four different lines:
Texas Electric Railway (1908-0148)
,
Tarrant County Traction
Company (1914-1931), North Texas Traction Company
(1902-1934), and Texas
Interurban Railway (1923-1932). The original rail lines resemble what is today
I-75 north to Dennison, I-45 south to Corsicana, I-30 west to Fort Worth and
I-35 west to Cleburne. Because of the expansive track system, The Interurban
Building played a tremendous role in shaping the communities that surround
Dallas and provided many opportunities for the people who lived in the rural
out-lying areas, which would eventually become the suburbs of the Metroplex.
Goods and services such as US mail delivery, newspaper delivery and perishables
were all transported on the Interurban lines. Passengers were able to increase
mobility, which enabled many suburbs to flourish in a time when automobiles were
mainly seen in the big city.
